Hey all please look at the bottom of the anenome in this picture. Is this ok? I just dont want it getting stuck and dying on me. This is only my 2nd anenome and the other really hasnt moved. I just got this one yesterday.

I dont think it is a problem.Although it looks uncomfortable for the anemone,it looks pretty cool too me. If it is a problem too you,you could try gently lifting the rock straight up off the anemone. As soon as it feels the rock move,it will retract it's arms.It should be stuck to the bottom of the tank good enough that lifting the rock should be no problem. But then you have to find a new spot for the rock.....I believe that I would just leave it alone for awhile and see what happens. Remember that an anemone will move to where ever it is most comfortable. So if it doesn't like this position,,,He will most likly move himself...

I just went back and looked at the rest of your pictures of your setup. And was wondering,,,,In your "original setup" you had an overflow and sump. Now it is a UGF...Why did you go to a UGF????????????????

Well...
Let's just say that I was being told by quite a few people that my initial setup was not very good. Everytime I asked someone about it they would frown upon my setup. So I did some research and found a person who has been in the marine aquarium hobby since the 1970's. Although their advice may be a little dated, they seem to have great success. I am sure you know who I am speaking of as they have a store here in Michigan and are known for propogating hard corals. The store is less than 1/4 mile away from my home. (The Perrins) I essentially changed my system so that I could mimic their systems in the store. I used 1/2" pvc pipe, then placed a UGF on top and fiberglass screening on top of that. Put two powerheads on the uplifts and removed the wet/dry because as I have been reading even Delbeek says they are horrid.
I removed the media from the wet-dry and essentially made it a sump for the time being, although I am thinking about making a refugium and eventually building or buying a protein skimmer. I think to answer your question I went to the UGF to help give more filtration and to act as a sort of plenum in the tank. Small weekly water changes and supplements seem to work at this store, so that is what I am going to do. Reading books have said ok things about this system. (I think plenum is Jaubert, so a pseudo-modified Jaubert system).
What do you think?

Andy,
Don't worry about the anemone - it's capable of getting out of that rock jam. They inflate and deflate and sometimes move around the tank. I would not risk damaging the creature by trying to move it. Just give it time -
Second - your set up just goes to show everyone that there ARE many ways to set up a salt tank. Although this appears unconventional - I can testify that if Mr. Perrin has these set-ups at his location - that they are no doubt an efficient and functional method of filtration.
Who are we to argue with the success and experience of his group up there.
Keep us updated
Brian ;)

I did just move the rock in the front because he looked pinched. I tried to gently pick him up and he wouldnt budge so I let him stay there. Hmm..damn anenomes, now my rocks look crappy :)
Anyhow thanks for the help, I just didnt want to keep it pinched thinking it could get out. He sould be ok now, and he is wide open. Now if I could just get the clown to play with it and keep the peppermint shrimp away.

P.S. Thanks broomer. I know that some people dont like UGF's. But I figured if the guy was that well known for corals and had been doing it for 30 years, he must be doing something right. Either way you look at it. I can either spend another $1000 replacing all the equipment again, or everything could die and I would spend $1000 later. Maybe I will get lucky and neither will happen. Reading is my key and even modern books say although UGF is not the best, it definitely works when you clean the substrate weekly and do small water changes to replenish the system.
