Help Sea Urchin Question

I have had an Urchin for almost 2 years. He is huge. I have noticed in the past few days he is loosing lots of spines. I have never noticed this before. Is it common and I missed it last time or is something going on with him?

An urchin losing it's spines means something is wrong.
