I was going to weed my zoas today and as I was doing it they started to close up like normal. But I noticed a few things that trouble me. First there is I think algae that is growing on a bare part of the rock, but it is dark green n looks like moss and was starting to over lap one of the closed zoas. I pulledmost of it off.
the thing that really concerned me was the mat of the zoas. the bottom half looked shredded. Im not sure why, its also not its purple colored mat, the shredded part is light blueish does thatmean its dead? All the zoas were open, but when they closed I noticed this.
FInally I saw a little part of the back rock. and there was thins fairly large white fuzzy ball looking object attached to the back of the rock. I have no idea what it is at all. I cant move the rock because the zoas grew off their frag rock onto a supporting rock. I pulled a piece off with tweezers i was using. COuld this be related to the shredding? what should I do?take it off the base rock and "treat it"???
thank you

well chances are the white thing on the back of the rock isnt a sponge.. sponges like a little more light. I think it's probably more likely a Tunicate. Many people mistake them for sponges, but they are actually more complex creatures. Yet they are still harmless and immobile. With the moss-like stuff, its probably a dense algae sea mat. Its pretty much just green hair algae that likes to cover everything. I've had this problem.. all you can do is try to get as much as possible out by hand, lower your nitrates, phosphates, and keep up with your water changes.. even the best tanks have these problems sometimes. Maybe even try some cerith snails.. Oh and about your zoos being shredded?? Do you have emerald crabs, or any type of polyp eating crap? that would be it. hope this helped
