Hi guys.... I noticed on my P. Fridmani this morning, large white splotches which do not appear to be attached to her (she seems female to me)body, but more like a pigment fading. It is like under the skin and not in 3 dimensions. It is like a "Caffe Au lait" splotch, but she has it on her head (a little) and the caudal aspect of her body. I do not see any ich on her or the others. She is acting fine. I wanst sure if this represented an amino acid deficiency (although I feed them meaty foods every other day) but I feed them food mixed with ZOE this mornig. I really do not think this is ich. Is this dangerous? Should I QT her. Is this infectious? I dont know if it is getting bigger or what. PLEASE ONLY SUGGEST SOMETHING IF YOU KNOW WHAT THIS IS. I would rather not QT her as I am currently QT'ing a blue hippo that is a very nervous fish. ANY AND ALL HELP IS APPRECIATED.

Hi Jason, I would not panic about the splotches. Many fish have sudden color change or patches from time to time. My purple and powder blue tangs get this from time to time. My purple will appear "bleached" in some areas all of a sudden and it is almost always after feeding. They always regain their color within a few minutes or hours.I have never heard a definate cause of it but it seems to happen mostly to small scaled or smooth skinned fish.

Hi Guys....Please LET me give you an update. The white splothes increased(on the fridmini) and actualy began to ulcerate. The other fish look fine. Her tail looked like it was chewed off yesteday (I have cleaner shrimp but I dont know if this is the reason. Today She didnt come out from her rock for a feeding .... I took out the rock and she jumped out onto the floor. I got her back in but she swam right to the bottom. She parked herself in a corner and guys.... I'm going to lose her :(
They are such sweet fish. :(
Now the cause??? Dont think it was the nutritional. Could have been an electrical burst (you know the summer weather but other fish dont have it). Water quality is supposedly perfect.
Any and all help is appreciated.
Thanks...

If it wasn't severe harrassment from other fish, I guess that it is bacterial. But, then again, you didn't want guessing...but, that's my guess.
Sorry

Must not be the same loss of coloration my purple gets. Mine is pigment fading never ulcerated only happens after feeding and goes aways within minutes usually.

Dr. Jay, how is your fish doing?
What she has sounds very similar to what my 3 Green Chromis had. They developed splotches which grew into what looked like ulcers and within 24 hours of showing these spots, they all died. :( I hope yours is fairing better than mine did.
All others in the tank are fine. These Chromis were brand new additions that didn't last more than 6 days in my tank.

Hi Guys... Thank you all for your comments and concerns... Yes... I lost her. :( You know.... Considering the way she deteriorated I THINK it was a bacterial infection.
But....The good news is that the other fish are peachy. :)
And even better... I am about to finish (this thursday) up a 3 week QT of a blue hippo tang. 4-5 Months ago I wouldnt have a prayer of keeping a blue hippo. Much less in a qt. Kuddos to you Master Trey.
And best of all .... I have a new baby girl. (a real baby... not a female fish) :D
