Hello Everyone & Happy New Year.
I am in the process of upgrading my tank from a 40g to 130g. Currently its a FOWLR tank, but since im going bigger i am going to introduce some corals.( After researching what i can put in it, with the fish i currently have)
What is the best way to get my 130 going with out it taking a couple of months to cycle and not stressing my fish. ( Yellow Tang, Pajama cardinals, Clowns, Blue Green Chromis, turbo snails)
How have you done tank upgrades? What worked and what didnt?
Thanks for your feedback!
Mel

If you have live rock in your 40, just move it into the new tank and it is instantly cycled for the bioload you currently have. You should add additional rock (live or base is fine), and should plan on only gradually increasing the bioload in the new tank for a while, but there should be no cycle to worry about (possibly a mini-cycle, but not a worry, either). I did this with my upgrade from a 110 to a 220 system, and had no problems. I moved all of the livestock and rock into Rubbermaid containers, emptied the 110, set up the 220 over a coup-le of days, then returned all of the livestock to the new tank and everyone was fine.

Great thank you for your help. I have quiet a bit of live rock in my 40 with lots of growth on it, so i will take some of the larger pieces out and add it to the 130. Did you use the water from your 110 and transfer it to the 220? ( Whatever was left from filling the rubbermaid containers). Another thing i didnt mention is i can have both tanks running at the same time till everything is transfered over, should i still put them in containers or just let them be in the 40?
Thank you again for your help!
