Help w/ Lighting and Heater????

Currentlly 55ga running just standard lighting ,my 260watt fixture will be here in about 4 days. So the ?s im getting at is when i set it up what should the heater be set at. I understand it will shut off and on and regulate the temp but does it need to be on? I was guessing it does due to the fact during lighting cycle at some point the lights will be off. Anyway just wanting to get some input on this before it gets here. Thanks

the lights wont really have too much of a effect on the tank (i have the same set up) so just set the heater at 80 degrees
