here , you can do like this one in the picture and run it with pump mag 7 (700gph)
pipe size 3/4

What causes the water to go into the drain?

The piping has a outlet at the very top for a start siphon. After its started, the pump does all the work. But, my question is, what size tank are we talking about utilizing this system for? What are you planning on keeping in this tank? The Quiet One pump is an excellent pump for a closed loop, I wouldn't go any small than the model 4000(1037gph), bigger if you want more flow. I have a FOWLR, 135g, 2 pumps, almost 3000gph. Using 1" intakes, and 3/4" returns, each broken up into 2 returns, catches the whole tank.

since for some reason the pump doesn't work with the skimmer I was thinking of doing a closed loop for extra water movement.

Is a system like this just hanging on the tank? No problem with weight/vibrations?
Also I really can't see the outlet to start siphon, any chance you could post a photo?

Heres what I have done in the past before I had a drilled tank.
You can replace the second elbow on the inlet with a tee and place a threaded cap on it. Unscrew the cap, pour water into the pump, replace cap start pump. This will prime the pump.
Just a suggestion.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't a Magdrive pump supposed to be submersed to operate correctly? Also, I would advise against adding too much pipe, valves and bends going to the intake side of the pump as this may restrict it enough to burn it up.
