Help with eel

Last night while at my lfs, I saw the cutest little eel. They called it a garden eel. I know, I know, shouldn't buy things until Ive done my homework but, it was too cute to pass up. My question is this.....Does anyone know anything about them. Did a search last night and couldn't find a thing. Lfs said very dosile, ok with community fish providing they aren't too small. I have him with my lionfish. He is about 6 inches long and about the diam. of a pencil. How big will he get? Lfs said he eats small feeder guppies, what else will he eat, I only feed my lionfish guppies about every two weeks and don't really want to do it more than that. He gets brine shrimp every other day.

I have never heard of a garden eel but that doesn't mean there is not such a eel. How about a description of its coloration as you have my interest up now. Is it solid colored or is it 2 toned?

well, he/she is just adorable. They are called garden eel is because they hang out in groups with their bodies buried under sand or grave with their heads waving in unison. They are very small with a blenny like head. coloration is green with dots like a leopard or lizard and several big spots through out the body. I did read that they can grow to 10 in which is quite small. I did find pictures of them but very little information. email me at platime@pacbell.net and I will send you the site.

hey playtime, heres what i know about them. the garden eel (Taenioconger hassi, grows to 14", so it stays really small. it should be fed small meaty foods, and relishes the occasional glass shrimp or guppy. They need a dsb, of 4-6", preferrably 6. minimum tank size is 30 gallons. They should not be kept with agressive fish such as triggers and other fish that might pick on them

a lion should be ok. make sure you have a very tight lid. i also read that there shouldnt be that much decor, so they can burrow and make tunnels. they will do fine by themselves, but in the wild, they are found in groups. hth, bo

Thanks, he is so cute. My new tank is big enough. I only put 3 pieces of Lr in the middle to make an arch for the lionfish to hide. (fuzzy dwarf). I found an awesome pic. if you want to see it, email me

Yeah, Garden eels burrow into the sand bed, and stick out and move with the current or water flow like sea grass. They also do best in a good size group, and dont be too shabby with the sand, I've heard no less then 6 inches. They also do best alone like seahorses. They are really neat.
