help with mated pair of true percs?

i bought a pair of true percs and when i saw them in the store they were doing well, mow that i have them in my 10 gal nano the female beats on the male,
is this something common?

i have them seperated in a breeding net right now, with the female in the net to let the male have the run of the tank.
the lfs told me to try that for couple days the put them back together.
so is this a good idea?
or should i bring them back and get another pair?

Well , your tank is too small to keep a pair of adult perculas . Also this is normal for the female to do this . They are having a dominance role play and the female is telling the male who is boss .
