Mine shrivel for awhile and come back out... is anything else touching it? If so that could really be bothering it -- do you see any signs of polyp extension at all?
Hard to call a leather coral dead without being completely wilted away

Agree with jackri here. If you use a turkey baster can you blow the black stuff off?
hi thanks for writing me back and giving your opinion i greatly appreciate it,,, i just tried the turkey baster,,, it didnt really blow any of the black off,, it did make some little white particles fly off of it and make like a little milky residue float through the water,,,,, what do you think?? you think its dieing or maybe still trying to survive from being shipped and stressed out ??? thanks for your help.....

I would give it time, I've had leathers stay in a shriveled stay for days (more than a couple) then be out fully.. and retract.
I just moved a couple to my frag tank and they let a slime coat out... come out for a bit and then shrivel.. and come back out -- not out a lot like my colt coral is.
Do you know specifically what kind of leather it is?
Also what kind of flow does it have on it?

I have 2 other leathers and have never had this problem before they have closed and get a film on them and then shed it and grow bigger,, but never look like this one its really bad,,,, its a leather tree....... it has moderate flow on it ... hoping it will recover cause I so love the leather's all of them and was so excieted over getting this one,,, I had actually ordered a toadstool leather a little while back and when I recieved it , it had a finger leather growing beside of it,,, so that was just the best got 2 corals for one price,,, and now it also has 2 baby leathers growing on the left side of it too,,,, but i do hope it survives Ive had it now since Tuesday so going to give it some more time and pray it survives......

The milkey residue makes me believe it is shedding. The problem here may be not enough flow over it to remove the shedding material. Some more flow over it could only help I think.
