Help with nitrates!!

For a little background... We have a 55 that has been set up for over a year now but we had been neglecting it lately because of a new baby! I am trying to get back on track and start building a reef. When I tested several weeks ago amazingly every thing was good except my nitrates.. which were sky high. After getting some advice here I have done about a 40% water change (which was the first water change in a long while..had only been doing top offs). Also after that, which may have been a mistake, I stirred up my sand and scraped the walls because of algae. I also rinsed out my Eheim with some of the water from the water change. My nitrates are still around 50. I need some help... any suggestions?? Do I need to just continue to do smaller water changes weekly and wait and see... should I just lose the Eheim and stick with my LR and LS for filtration? By the way I have been using R/O for several months now but b4 that it was tap.
Thanks!

You should continue the small water changes. I would also look into setting up a fuge to grow macro algea. They reduce the nitrates.

fuge definitely wont hurt
if not remove the ehiem, at least remove teh media
contiue to do weekly water changes
and check your test kit to make sure it is accurate. what kind do you have?
