I hooked up this skimmer I purchased today (used) it needs a pump and a air pump to run. I have it so it suck water from the refugium and spits it out to the sump. is this ok?

I'm not much of a refugium expert, but I would do the reverse. I would have the skimmer intake in the sump, and have it dump into the refugium. That way whatever organics and nutrients the skimmer doesn't pick up goes to the refugium where it can be broken down. This is just my opinion though. Ironreef, NMreef and Johnysalt all have good refugium set ups. Guys'?

Personally I disagree with taking water from the refugium you will be killing many of your pods. And if you dump into the refugium you may be causing too much disturbance to that environment, which is meant to be a slow moving one. I say take from the sump…….and return to the sump.

I agree you defeat the purpose of a refugium. you can take water from the tank to the pump to the skimmer to the sump. Just need a n tube thats 6" into the tank. Or plump the sump to the skimmer and leave the skimmer behind the tank.

The Aqua Medic is a good skimmer...however some feel the pump is underpowered. I have the multi that comes with a diffrent pump then the sump model and I'm VERY happy with it.

I got a rio 2700 with it. I know its a rio! but for the skimmer I think it would do fine, I wouldent use a rio for my return pump thats for sure! Diatom since you have one I need to ask you this. how do you stop the bubbles from exiting the output?

Mine came with 2 boxes that the return water flows into before entering the tank so I have very few problems with bubbles. I imagine that after the skimmer runs for a while the bubbles will subside...if not you might try some sponge material in the return.
