I just want live rock, sand, and like a goby, or clown fish, an shrimp, not all of those just like one of each, one fish and maybe a few shrimp. Will they need any special lighting?

also let me say this, if you just want to "test yourself" you should not start off with a 5 gal tank. Nanos are hard to keep stable and can be very discouraging to some one just getting started in saltwater. I would reccomend a 55 gal you can get them pretty cheap and they have enough water vol. to stay pretty stable. If you want to do a 5 gal. by all means do it, but do it because you want a 5 gal. nano and not because you want to try saltwater and you think that its going to be cheaper. I started with a 10 gal. but I really wanted a 10 gal mini reef, and when I set my 10 gal. up I spent as much as it would have cost me to set up a 55 gal.

I wouldent put a clown in any thing less than a 10 gal you could do a neon goby and thats about it as far as fish go you might be able to get away with a clown goby but I wouldent do it.
as far as the lighting, If I were you I would go ahead and get a small pc fixture the LR, fish, and shrimp don't need any special lighting but I promise that you will want to start adding corals before too long

Ok, I decided I do really just want a 5ga tank for a few months. I dont want to go all out an buy a big tank and spend 500 bucks an found out I either dont like SW and it's just to much for me, or if I can't get the hang of it. So I just want a small live rock, the sand, and shrimp, maybe something else like shrimp but I doubt it, no fish! make this just a cool little tank for my entertainment area of my apartment. I kinda wanted 3 shrimp, is that too many? if not what else may I add? Also what size live rock should I get an where can I find one that small, 20lbs I would say is TOO much

I'm so new to this but I think they advise 1.5-2lbs of LR for ea. gal. So 10lbs, My first LR was 5lbs so your place of purchase should have a 10lb or a few small pieces. Good luck.

You can't have more than 1 pair of clowns. They will fight.

Hiya,
You should be able to go to your local LFS and buy just a small amount. Or, sometimes one of our favorite auctions sites will sell LR by the pound.
As for inverts, you could put in a some shrimp, hermits if you want and snails. It'd still be a nice active tank with all of them moving around.
You may want to move down into the nano forum and ask some questions there. Some folks will tell you, you can actually have one small fish in there, kinda like a neon goby or a clown, but that would be about it.
