I've posted this message elsewhere on this forum, but it was being deleted by the moderators for reasons I won't get in to...
Anyway, I recently ordered a "clean-up" crew from some (not to be named) online store. Everything looked great when I got it. I acclimated all of the new critters as instructed, but slower (taking an hour instead of about 30 minutes) figuring that this was a safer way to do it.
This was last Friday, since then I have seen 3 dead astrea snails, and one dead scarlet hermit. All from the stuff I received on Friday. I don't think that they arrived dead, as I didn't notice anything wrong until Saturday.
I tested the water before I put anything in, and then again once I noticed the first dead snail. Ammonia 0, pH 8.2, salinity 1.024, nitrites 0, nitrates 2.
These are not the first inverts in the tank, and the fish have all been doing well. We also have button polyps that showed up on our live rock a few weeks ago. Basically, everything seems great.
What would cause the death of these critters.
The package I got included 20 blue leg hermits, 20 scarlet hermits, 2 emerald crabs, 1 cleaner shrimp, 1 coral banded shrimp, 20 astrea snails, 1 blue star fish.
The only deaths have been the 3 snails and the 1 hermit.
We already had astrea and regular turbo snails, and blue leg hermits in the tank for over 7 months, and a cleaner shrimp for around 5 months. I've noticed no deaths from them.
The only other tidbit of info would be that the weather when they arrived was about 65 degrees. Our inverts that we've had in our tank for 7 months arrived in 5 degrees below zero weather this past winter.
Please advise me as to what I could have done differently.
