do starfish sometimes shead one or two of their legs

I would not consider it normal in 99% of hobbyist tanks. Please provide more specifics, like type, how long you have had it, SPECIFIC water parameters. If you have had it less than a month, how did you acclimate it.

no ive had it for about 5 months and all of a sudden it looks like hes sheding two of his legs he has been doing very good thats what i cant understand

Is it a sand sifter?
Many of these stars will starve...and they show signs by disintegrating, and having arms just drop off. They are VERY sensitive to water quality issues, it is really important to know what your parameters are.
