I don’t know what is going on in my tank. Just recently my pink tip anemone died and about a week latter one of my green chromes died. I had them both for about 5 months with no problem and just one day dead!! My anemone was looking great just one day before, and the next day it had melted away into a stub. Another big problem I am having is the what appears to be brownish redish algae growing all over my live rock as well as my substrate. The stuff gets fanned away and I have done a water change, but it comes back and grows fast. The problem with that is that it has grown over some coral and killed some of my zanthoid and star polyps. WHAT IS THE STUFF!! and how can I get rid of it for good. Below are my tank specs, which look fine.
The tank has been running for about 9 months
It’s a 75gal
About 100 lbs of live rock
Crushed coral substrate
Originally used tap water, but for the last 3 months have been using RO water in changes
Inhabitants: Blue tang, Yellow tang, 2 percula clown, 2 I mean 1green chromes, mandarin, neon goby, fire fish, royal gamma, three line damsel, cleaning wrasse, 10 snails, fire shrimp, carpet anemone, 2 father duster and clusters, zanthoid, yellow and brown polyps, red and green mushrooms, star polyps, and one cluster of polyps that I cant remember the name (pink border green center about 20 little polyps) and other various brown polyps with short tentacles that just appeared all over the live rock.
Specs: salinity .22
Ammonia 0
Nitrites 0
Nitrates 40
PH 8.2
Alkalinity 4.55meg/L
Calcium 400
Lighting: 48” X 6 power compacts and one florescent bulb
Let me know what you think and any ideas.
Thanks
jim

What kind of water are you using?
Any chance the carpet stung your other anemone? If it had stung your fish though it would have eaten it.
Nitrates of 40ppm is a littel high for my tastes.
Using a protien skimmer?
Runing Carbon?
What is your substrate?
Age of lighting?
Salinity of .22

Question: it seems to me like there is ALOT of fish for a 75g? And what about the crushed coral? Do you think that when water changes are done, the CC is disturbed?
Some some thoughts,;)
