I'm not really sure how long to leave left over food in the dish...mine's usually pretty cleaned out. I do, however, take the dish for my seahorses out every evening and clean it out...just in case.
When I feed my horses, I usually turn the filtration off (first cue) and then after feeding the dish, I tap very lightly on the glass near the dish (second cue...don't do that so much anymore, first cue at this point is enough for my horses).
Again, your new babies are beautiful...kellogi, if I remember correctly...very nice.

When I feed mine, I used a clear tube, Like what is on an indergravel filter. stick one end in the feeding dish, and pour the food in the top. It gave the horses a chance to see the food, and follow it down to the dish.
You can add Nass snail to help with clean up. I also had red hermits. Small ones.

Beautiful!!!!
Another pair of very spoiled seahorses
I can't say enough how awesome it is to have the Seahorse Forum here on swf. The rewards are right in front of us here!

Boy, do I know where you're at. I was SO nervous when I brought my first pair of horses home too, shooting from the hip with feeding and care. With a bit of tweaking, we've got it down and I'm much more comfortable with what I'm doing for them. Thankfully. I'm still working on getting the bristleworms out of the tank...well, at least the larger ones, but that's going very nicely too since they crawl into the feeding dish during the day to clean it out, and I clean the dish out before I feed supper and usually take out 1 or 2 at a time. I don't want to completely eradicate all of those worms, but I had quite a population explosion in that little tank from free feeding the tank for so long. Little by little, it's all coming together. It will for you too.
Best of luck with your new charges. Any questions, please be sure to post them here. There's usually someone that will be able to help out.
Any ideas what you'll name them??
