i have to in my 58 gallon i love them it really reinacts the waves in the ocean. people keep saying they jam. and they do. mine do about once a month or atleast one of my two do anyways. all you have to do is get a screwdriver and pop off the bottom half of the power head after you remove the sponge filter. the mechanics in it are very very simple just a sprocket and a propellar. take these 2 objects out and wash them with warm water. put it back together, atach to glass, and plug in and BAM! it works like new. i would rather clean this and have it work once a month than have a PH that is fixed in place. hope this helps

I take mine apart, too. I usually have to use a bottle brush to clean all the dirt from the sprocket, propeller, etc. I also clean the magnet and the motor shaft while I have it apart. Now, I don't do mine once a month....far less frequently. I'm not sure, using mine as an example, that just soaking it would get it clean.
It really is easy to take apart and put back together though....really! :D

You get what you pay for. Good equipment just shouldn't require that type of maintenance. All that's missing is the 3000 mile oil change. You have to run it with the sponge to minimize maintenance and a reefer would prefer not to have a sponge of concentrated wastes contaminating the water. Fish only tank product at best unless you don't mind taking it in and out frequently which of course leads to more water contamination.

I don't use a spong. I like providing the intermittent current without having the expense of a wavemaker.
