Hey solarscar
I know your post was a whila ago so please forgive me for writing this 10 or so days later. I am very new and still in research stage. I like the idea you have there and was wondering if you could explain what I am looking at. Obviously the bucket holds the water, the black box is the pump the clear hose at the top of the container moves upper water? the clear hose going into bottom moves lower water? what does the other bottom line do? Sorry for dumb question.

if you look at the bottom of the first pic, theres a T, the tube with the red stop valve is sucking in water, that goes to the pump, the pump then sends the water to the bottom and top of the bucket , hence the T connection
i found it easier to just buy a submersible pump and just throw it in there with the water+salt, mixes in less than 5 minutes

is that pump submersible ? can you run a submersible pump out of the water like that, as long as you never run it dry ?

Hello, It would probably be easier with a pic. This bucket holds 6 gallons and the lid is air tight.
The pump is on a timer, it turns on for a couple hours a day, then on saturday(when i do the water change) it starts really early in the morning, so its mixing up until i turn the pump off.
When changing water, i simply take the return hose (the hose that is coming from my sump/fuge) out of the main tank (while the power to that pump is off of course) and stick it into a bucket the same size as my mixing bucket (pictured above). after that i turn my attention to the mixing bucket, unplug the water pump, turn the red handle to the off position, and then with a pair of needle nose vise grips (teeth protected with small vinyl tubing) i clamp that little hose right in the middle. I then get my 10 ft. long tube, connect it to the ball valve on my mixing container and attach the other end to the sumps return pipe (remember its hanging in my waste water tub) i then release the ball valve and all the new water flows into the sump. This takes me 10 min and i don't get a drop of water on anything! I am usually half asleep when doing it.

ok, i see what you're saying, that is an great idea !!
Is that pump you have, the submersible type ??
The reason i ask, is that, i have a submersible pump, and i'm wondering if i can set it up like yours, and run it outside the bucket.

What kind of pump do you have? Some "submersible's can be run inside or outside water. If you know what kind of pump it is you could probly look it up or somone might know.

it doesn't get that good of a current ..I think the way the orginal pics. show it you get a better mix ( top and bottom.) I tried it with the pump inside for the first time this weekend and it works ok I guess, I just think the other set-up is more mess free.
