hermit crab molting and shells

I have 4 hermit crabs -- blue legged.. thats the best description i can give you.. Two have 'molted' -- thought they died when I saw the 'molt' -- anyways, my question is -- when they molt, does this mean they need a new shell? or are under stress? I've put in numerous shells in the tank, and have no idea what the 'right size' of shell to introduce. They haven't taken any interest to the shells -- but I dont know if they are 'ready' to leave theirs or not. Opinions?

like all crabs/shrimp, they molt in oarder to grow. It doesnt mean that they need bigger shells. Its just what they all do. As long as the shells you put in are a bit bigger but not huge they should be fine.
