hermit crabs

ive seen hermit crabs in beach tanks for kids, not aquariums, and ive seen them in cucs, can hermit crabs breathe underwater and out of water?
the crabs they sell at pet stores that live on a sandy beach with a wet sponge and little bit of water in a corner live completely in the air
if i remove a hermit crab from my DT, will it be able to breathe for a few hours or even days?

Its a different species buddy. Just like some turtles need to live under water and some only need water occasionally such as the box turtle.
