Hermit Question

In order to keep hermits in my tank will I need extra hermit shells so they can move into them when they want? I see a lot of people with hermits but never see extra shells in their tanks.

If you have smaller hermits, obviously they're going to need a place to move on up to. You can provide some shells, and if any of your cleanup crew die, hermits may choose to take over their real estate. One of my larger hermits just moved into an old snail shell, though I think it was a bit ambitious on his part. He doesn't seem to be able to get around as well anymore.

My tank looks like a shell graveyard!
All shapes and sizes of shells laying around for the taking. Every now and then, one of the crabs will upgrade his digs to a more deluxe shell. I routinely add new crabs (to make up for the ones picked off) and they all swap shells. I never thought to clean up the unused shells, but it looks pretty natural to me.
