Howdy guys !
Hope all is well. So......I am deciding about buying this Gold Puffer. I am getting a really good deal on it, for $ 200. I am just a little worried about the coloring. I checked a few sites out, and they say -
The Golden Puffer is a fish of many names including Guinea Fowl Puffer and Spotted Puffer. It changes appearance during different stages of its life. While in the black phase, it is black with white spots over the entire body. The golden phase is denoted by its rich burgundy to golden tan coloring with smaller white spots covering its body. It also has a yellow phase, during which, it is lacking the white spots. It very rarely changes phases while living in an aquarium.
My question is, will he change to all gold or remain the same. I always wanted one all gold. What should I do guys -? Thanks

Not really my area, but the last sentence of what you read seems to answer your question. I think this is one of those areas that just doesn't have a yes or no answer; just educated guesses. (My guess would be no, but that is an uneducated guess.) I've had a couple puffers of this genus and neither changed color very much; and I got both at a small size. The fish in your pic is beautiful, though, and I like puffers mostly for their personality. (Sounds like a blind date promo.)

I remember reading on WWM that these kind of puffers don't change color in captivity.

That is true, they don't change in captivity but that picture really looks like a yellow dogface puffer and not a golden puffer. Can you see traces of it's old patterns like faded white spots? There is a big difference between the two and $200 is a really good price for a golden puffer but way too much for a yellow dogface. Even if it is a dogface puffer, one with that much yellow is pretty rare. Tough decision if you ask me...

That is a yellow dogface, also known as a yellow belly dogface and it will get more gray/brown on its top half. as it gets older.

i would dare to say the other posters are correct in saying that is a yellow dogface puffer not a golden..noticing the lips on this particular puffer are greyish in coloring.. not a bad looking fish mind you k,but not a $200 fish swf.com sells this species for 83 bucks.. i suggest if you want this fish talk the lfs down in price or buy from swf.com JMO
