Hey Moderators, Southdown

Hey, I've noticed a very large demand for Southdown Play sand, but its like trying to find a white buck in the snow. SWF.com carries LR and LS, would it be possible to get this page to start ordering from the manufacturer and carrying it on SWF.com? I along with a number of other members would probably love them for it.

yup that is a good idea! Southdown at the HD near me is about 1.25 a bag (yes a buck twenty five!, they may have been running a special when I bought it but I didn't much care about that:) ) it is by far the only cheap thing that I have found for my tank!
As far as this site carrying it I think they would still have to charge a huge shipping fee for it as each bag runs 50lbs...

I got mine from the garden center of HD in July. There were 50 pound and 100 pound bags. If you look inside the store, all you find is that quikrete stuff and the like...

You wont find it at HD in Texas, yet......I'd go to (XXXX) (((come one man, you been here long enough to know the rules
and see if any reefers have imported any to your area. Generally, its only found in the north eastern part of the US. I have a buddy here in So Cal who manages a HD, he's been able to bring in about 30-40 pallets over the past 18 months.

The DILLYBOBS scores!!!! After searching a few stores I located some old castle stone products. :) aT A Home Depot in another state. ( CT. Just 20 miles away).
Who started this scavenger hunt anyways!!!!
It maybe a hobby,
but so much responsibility comes with it.

SWF.com is a Fla store, and Southdown just doesn't ship down this way.
Bottom line, why would you want to pay $40 in shipping for a $4 bag of sand?? You are only getting $4 worth of sand! If Southdown is readily available, then by all means get it, but don't buy it online for godness sakes.

You guys ARE talking about the Southdown Playsand right?
I've heard mixed reviews about them, I have heard you never want to use that sand because it has heavy metals and god knows what else. What is the bottom line, cause I'd love to get southdown, saves my wallet??
Please enlighten me

Im about to go on the treasure hunt for some Southdown (old town) sand at my local Homedepots, Lowes, and other places. If i do infact find some, how much would i need for a 30gal tank? I am just now switching from CC to LS. And where do you reccommend i get the LS from? Reccomended depths for my size tank?
THANK YOU :D

I think I remember reading on here that the deeper the better, it holds more nitrifying bacteria. So if that's true then you atleast need a 2" bed IMO. The floor on my 18 gallon is 18" x 13" and a 25 lb bag of LS put a 2" bed in my tank.

I have heard that the only diffrnece in the southdown and the carib-sea brand stuff is the handeling of it. The stuff that goes in the carib-sea bag is more sterile than the southdown...
Don't really know the validity of this statment, just throwing it out.
