Ive been running my 12 gal for 3 months and I still cant get my nitrates to go down. I have a crushed coral bottom with 20 pounds of LR. I was using mechanical filtration but thought that might have been the sorce so I swithched and am now skimming. I have 4 Hermit crabs, two snails, a blue damsel (trying to get it to cycle) a pepermint shrip, and two feather dusters. I am very religious when it comes to water changes (every sun. 10%) useing RO water. Nitrites and amonia levels are at 0 ALWAYS. Does any one know what is up.

It is at about 30 40 ppm. I have thought about switching out the crushed coral but how does one go about doing that? Do I jsut quickly make the switch by removing the LR and my inhabitants? Can I mix the Crushed coral with Live Sand?

I wouldnt take anything out. Take a cup of CC out every 4or5 days, til its all gone. then start adding your sand in the the same increments. dont wanna do too much at once ya know.

How long have you had the nitrate spike?
From what I have heard crushed coral takes a while to build up a nitrate bed.
Also how much and how often are you feeding your tank? Nitrate is the end product of decomposition.
