High pH? Is this a problem?

I'm still pretty new to this hobby and learning a lot. I'm using DI water, but I knew I needed to monitor my chemistry better, so I bought a Red Sea marine test kit with the various tests. I tested my pH and Alkalinity last night. My pH was about 8.4 (maybe even toward 8.6!), and my alkalinity was "high" (sorry, they don't give a numeric value). I know the pH and alkalinity are related, but is this a good condition? Is this unhealthy for my critters? I've read quite a bit on here and most folks seem to think that the pH will be regulated by all the carbonate in your tank. Any opinions? :help:

A PH value of 8.4 and even 8.6 is good and generally kind of hard to maintain I would think it is good as long as it does not go any higher than 8.6. then you would have a problem.
