High trates in relation with sandbed aggitation?

I can't remember where I read that aggitating the substrate will cause increase in nitrate. I have had high nitrates and I have stired my sand to clean it. I also have a sandsifting starfish. When I do water changes, I vacuum this brown powdery stuff that settles in crevices. When I add the water, I blow the water at the LR and this brown stuff also comes out but the filter catch it.
Would this have anything to do with my high nitrates?

yes your sand does capture lots of nitrates and if your stiring it up rather than removing it by the suction then could raise your nitrates as well as your phosphates so when you pour your watter in pour it very slowly so it only goes down into the watter by a few inches maybe slower but will not disturbe the watter balance
