HIppo Tang behavior..

For the past few days, my hippo tang has been acting strange. All levels are normal, tank temp is 82.5, no new fish, but I did recently add some corals. He used to ge the type to swim all around the tank, and would only hide when sleeping. Now, he keeps wedging himself between my rocks, and stays there all day/night. I know he isnt stuck b/c I moved the rock up and he swam out. Within a few minutes, he went back to that same spot. I also noticed he isnt coming out to eat anymore. What is his problem? What can I do to convince him to swim around more??? Thanks!

Your tank is running really warm, did you know that? Most people run like 78-79 but definately alost 83, this could really be stressing the fish and causing this erratic behaviour. You might need a chiller in the near future or at least run a clip on fan in the mean time. this will lower it 2 or 3 degrees depending on water volume.

Thanks...Well, I have had a fan running on the top of it for a few weeks, and it seems to not help. Would removing the glass top help at all? I am just afraid of fish jumping out. Also, how much are cheap chillers? Thanks

Look in the classifieds here and on the auction site,, i know they start at like $400 GLASS TOP SHOULD DEFINATELY be OFF! Thats Holding in the heat as well.. People prefer no tops to help with gas exchanges and more aeration,, But I bet that is one of the biggest factors!

Something is stressing it. What are your actual water parameters?

I tested this morning, but forgot to write it down. I just remember it being good, except the PH was a little low, so I increased it a little. I will recheck tomorrow AM, and post here. Thanks for the help everyone!

75, 2 clowns, mandaarin, yel. tang, 2 clams, corals, crabs, snails, shrimp. I know the yellow tang would be your first instict, but everything has been fine with them since day one. I was thinking about changing the rock scape tomorrow to see what it does, but then again, I dont want to stress him out more. Should I,or should I not?

Actually, unless a member just joined, that info is usually wrong and outdated.

I would leave the rock and get him eating. Whatever you normally feed, add a few drops of garlic to make sure he eats. As long as he's eating, he should be fine. Not eating is usually a bad sign
