HOB DIY FUGE question on a 20gallon Long REEF

I have a emperor 400 external bio wheeel filter (has media filters as well). This model of external filtration has to "chambers" with the intake in the middle of them. Please tell me what you think of this plan....
1.) I want to cut the intake tube down to a shorter length. The tank in only 13" deep and my intake tube is probably 11".
2.) Take out the media filters from one chamber and add a little bag of LS, then cover it with crumbles of LR and stuff chaeto (spelling?) around and above the rock.
3.) Buy pods and place them in there so they can grow/reproduce.
4.) cut egg crate out and fit it over the chamber so alge will not escape
5.) cut a hole in the cover so I can fit a small light over it
While this is all going on I want to buy new media filters for the other chamber to help eliminate any ammonia, phosphates.
OR
I might be able to get my hands on an older aqua clear pretty cheap which I know i can control the flow of the water better.
What are your thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?
Also is there any real advantage to do this project or should I just add media filters to the tank
thanks in advance

sounds like a good plan! the fuge will control your nitrates and phosphates so thats an advantage! also this method is cheaper than drilling the tank and plumbing in a sump fuge! i would add carbon and/or chemi-pure to the second chamber to help keep your water clear! are you running a skimmer?

thanks acroshark, I was planning on doing exactly ewhat you said, except that I have no idea what chemi-pure is (is it like a media filter?) I am not running a skimmer yet and honestly dont think I need one but what I might do is upgrade to a 40gallon breeder in about 2 months and use acrylic to add and over flow area with the baffles and skimmer in there, but to answer your Q not yet, do u have one u can suggest

yes chemi-pure is a media filter! you buy ready packed into media bags that you can add straight to your filter! im running a Current USA Skimmer (rated for 110gal) and im very happy with it! retails for about $150! my display tank is a 20gal long! have a look at my thread "Acros 20gal long"
