when you run a canister filter and a hob filter how does a protein skimmer skim out fish poop and other things and protein....in my 125 reef i have a wet dry so i sort of understand how the coralife SS works...but how does a HOB skimmer work ? how does it get the poop and extra food and protein out of the tank ?
if someone can explain this process that would be great.

Regardless of where the skimmer is...in sump, out of sump or HOB they all work the same way... by removing the dissolved organic compounds out of the water column
by mixing air and water to create 'foam'.
They may use different methods to mix the air and water or get the water from different levels of the tank, but they all work the same way.

coralife ss's are also hob style. the only difference is that the intake and output are inside the tank and the skimmer hangs over the side. btw, a way to save space in your sump is to hang the simmer on it (saves me a lot of space in my 20lonh sump/fuge).

+1 on octopus. I bought one and hooked it up this past week. It has been skimming like mad. It is a hang on back model 100ss. I don't know how I was doing it without one.

i don't have any experience with octopus HOB, but i do with aqua-c's remora. while it's pleasing to the eye, it's quite inefficient. i would have been better off having no skimmer, due the massive amount of microbubbles it put into the display.
i had very good luck with the aqua medic turbofloater. it worked very well. the only downside was the rather large pump that sits in the tank. i would imagine this is the same with most hang on skimmers anyway.
