Hogfish Update

Just must crow about the 3 Hogfish I bought a couple months ago. I have become such a fan of them I have put on hold a Spanish Hog Juv my store just got in. The other 3 were 2 sub adults Diana's, and Coral, and a Juv Coral (all in different tanks). Normally you find about 5 listed for sale, the other 2 being the Cuban and Lyretail. The Diana's is one of the more aggressive Higs (it is in with my big Porks) the Coral's are mellow, the Spanish supposedly mellow (spanish grows up the largest of the 5. Anyway if you want a great looking, easy feeding, active swimming fish then consider this species. Not one of the 3 skipped a beat not got a spot, nor missed a meal from day 1 so that got my attention right off.

Picked up spanish hog today and like a good hobbiest it is in qt for at least the next 2 weeks (depending on how it does). It is quite healthy no spots eat within the first 2 hours (mysis and formula 2 cube cut up). I am really into these fish and now have 3 of the 5 normally available. I really can't say enough about this species of fish they are GREAT (as tony the tiger would say).

yep puff, great fishes. my favorite is the cuban but they are the hardest to keep b/c of thier deep water habits. i believe you have a red dianas, coral(2), and now the spanish? my fav. things about them are there awesome personalities....comparable to that of triggers and puffers. eat everything, do they stir your sand bed any? later, bo

grouperhead; Yes I now have 3 different ones actually 4 since I have 2 corals. Must admit I have no tanks with sand all mine are CC. I have not yet figured where these fish sleep, do they bury as wrasses do (same family) or do they go in a hole or behind a rock? They are in 4 different tanks at the moment and I haven't found where any of them are at night yet. The lfs also has a cuban but it did not look good so I din't consider it and also remebered the discussion here about them being deep water and hard keepers (probably why on the net sites they are the most expensive Hogs). It isn't that they have personality like the Puffers but the colorations and the constant movement make them very appealing to me, and it took me all this time to even buy my first one (never really saw many till just lately at my lfs and he has brought them in because I keep buying them (fooled him on the cuban tho he should have asked me first).

yes they do have great color and always on the move. most cubans at my lfs run from 60-75 bucks depending on size. they have a 5" right now for 65 bucks. I really really want it but am kinda scared to take the risk on it. corals are also really cool.....do all hogs have a seperate juvie and adult coloration? i know the coral does. later, bo

grouperhead; The coral and diana's are dark brown with spots as juveniles, the coral (the juv I have) has pretty yellow spots along the top and rear fin on the brown background. The Diana's as juv are brown with white spots. The Spanish as juv are golden-yellow with violet scale margins. I have a site on the club that has pictures of the 5 main ones as juv and adult if interested contact me and I'll tell you which one.
The new spanish one I have is about 2 and half inches and is doing as good as the other 3 , but to be sure it is qt for now till it is ready to join my baby starts and stripes puffer. This should be a good match as they about the same size with the Hog a hair larger at this point. I am hooked on these guys what can I say. Also, my lfs has a cuban for about 60 but as I said before it looks a bit spotted so I used sense and forgot that one. The spanish cost me 20 which I thought fair.
