home depot halides

what would be the difference if i were to go get everything i need from home depot for a halide system as oppsed to buying stuff designed for aquariums? has anyone done this that can offer some advice? (if advised?)

do a search on here. this has been discussed 5,000 times. It will not work because the PAR is different. Thats why they costs many hundreds and not $40.

Honestly it works the same, the "speciality" ones like hamilton are just more expensive. and usually they make a light fixture designed to fit on an aquarium, but you could mount it up on the canopy

Yes, you could probably successfully use ANY generic halide housing for your aquarium. No, you can't use commercial grade halide bulbs. Actually, you CAN use them, but the spectrum will be useless to inverts and GREAT for algae. Yup, I had to find out for myself.

so you can use any halide ballast and then go buy the right spectrem bulb from an aquarium store?
Do I have that down right?

As long as the wattage of the ballast matches the bulb that you plan on using, you are good to go.
Just know that commercial halide housings aren't built with heat reduction as any kind of goal in their design.
