Hooking up R/O Unit to soft water unit!

I just recieved my new 6 stage r/o-d/i unit, my question is I also already have a soft water unit in the garage. I was wondering if its ok to hook it up all together or seperate? If together I need to figure out how to tie it in. I bought a 35gal water barrel with pump to store my water which will be nice. If any one has done this let me know, also is their a benifit of doing it one way vs the other? Thanks

I got my water softener after I had put the ro unit under the sink.
I have been using the soft water for changes and the ro water for top off. 3 months now. So far so good.
To tie in, just put the saddle clamp on the PVC on the "out" side of the softener.
