The LFS store had some Horseshoe crabs the other day. I thought they were pretty cool looking but my book does not have much info on them. The ones the LFS store had were only about the size of a dime maybe a little smaller. does anyone know anything about them?
Thanks
Chris

I know they get extremely big, and from what I hear they shouldn't be kept in home aquariums.

If placed in a LARGE healthy system they can be quite hardy. They need large sand beds to feed from. The problem is like the sand sifting starfish is that they depleat the sand of their natural food and then starve. They also need tanks kept on the cooler side 80F. And they can grow pretty big if they can live long anough.

besides the obvious fact of them dyeing (i had one and im pretty sure he starved to death) you will never see them. they bury into the sand and only rarely come out. currents in our tanks are to strong so if they do come out they are thrown about. Due to these reasons and obviously the death issue i would reccomend staying away from these. I read somewhere on here that you should almost keep these in a tank set up just for them where conditions are right for them and not for most other inhabitants.

would they be ok for aggressives or would it be better to go with a dragon wrasse to stir up the sand bed also how thick does the sand bed have to be for the wrasse i was thinking 2 to 3 inches

Horseshoes would probably be killed by most typical aggressive fish although a Dragon Wrasse would not. BUT you should research any thing before getting it. The D. wrasse will constaintly search the sand and rock rubble for food and its good to have lots of LS for it. A very cool fish but they get big and very mean. D. wrasses do bury so yes, at least 3 + inches of sand for it. But in an aggessive tank with lots of sand can cause high nitrates so everythig most be researched so as to know if your system is or is not the best set up for that animal.

Those fish are generally nippers depending on species and size of tanks and food supplies ect. The D wrasse has some pretty atractive fins to nippers but if large enough could hold its own. You cant really just ask the Q. like that. All fish and systems have unique conditions that require research from reliable sources. Books, articals, ect. Dont just take my word for it.
