I am having a problem with the temp in my tank it is staying at 82-83. It wont go any lower. I have turned off my heater it is not in direct sunlight or near a vent or window. There is one power head in it moving water it is a Rio 2500 and my filter is the EHEIM Wet/dry canister. To try and cool it I have left the glas on top open abut a half inch to see if that may help but it still stays hot. any other sugestions?

1. At my LFS, they sell mini portable fish tank fans that hook onto your tank internally and cools the water.
2. Leave your top open
3. Whats the temperature in your house?
4. Get zip lock bags, fill them with ice (make sure they are sealed good) and let them float on top of your water until you reach your desired temperature. then remove them and see if your water goes back up to 82 degrees
5. turn off your heater or check the setting, you might have hit the switch up and made it to hot
I have had this problem before and quickly fixed it, my temperature now constantly stays at 77.4 degrees all the time
:D

82-83 degrees? Is that the temperature in your house as well? They make chillers that would fix your problem but unfortunately they are quite expensive but it is an option. What type of lighting do you have? If you have metal halides, they can heat up your water quite a bit. If so, how far from the water surface are they?

My house never gets hotter then 75 and if it's just me like 70. the lighting I have is the one that came with the tank but I leave it off most of the day. The light itself is just a long neon tube. I have left the top open about a half inch so there is some air flow.

What kind of thermometer are you using? The ones
that float or stick to the side are not really
that accurate. There is a digital one that is a
lot better.Of course it is more expensive, mine
cost 26.00,but woryh it.

I have found that the temp in my tanks runs about 4-5 degrees higher then the house as a rule. Although we almost always have thermometers in our tanks, we forget to worry about an accurate reading of the temp in the room! Get yourself a dedicated thermometer for the room, since the one on the thermostat is almost never accurate. I throw the A/C on when the room temp hits 75. By the way...where are you ATC? I'm at JFK.

Having a tank at 82 probably doesn't pose as a real potential risk, it's not ideal but it will work. I chiller as you know will probably be quite expensive. If you wanted you could construct your own chiller. First buy a small micro-fridge. Take some sort of flexible tubing and with a power head creat self-contained cycle of fluid from the fridge to your tank. Bend the tubing several times where in contact with the tank water and inside the fridge (just like a radiator). The cooling capacity of this system can be regulated but adjusting the flow of the working fluid inside the tubing. I can't say I've ever attempted to create this but I think it's an idea that has potential.

I keep mine at 80 all the time. That is what the temp in the apt seems to get to each afternoon. I live in Tucson where it gets VERY hot. I have a/c, but also live in an upstairs apt with west facing windows & patio.
Question: 80 all the time too high?

I do ATC at Travis right now But would like to work at JFK (Hint,Hint)
I have been cheking the temp of the house and been keeping it cool I figured the same: above 75=To hot. What is the name of that digital thermometer you were talking about never seen one before. Then again I havent looked for one either. But I would pay for the accuracy!
