They rigged the gas pumps to not give you the amount of gas that the pump registered! I always wondered about that crap and who monitors that... COMPLETE B.S. and way way below humanly in these tough times...
that's just wrong, when it takes 70$ to full up my little 3000GT guess thats why you should know how many gallons you car holds. hopefully they got shut down.
Unfortunately this happens, but it is a very rare that this happens. Usually when there is a problem with a pump it is in the customer's favor.
I know that here in NC the state's Department of Agriculture checks the dispensers at a gas station. I am sure that it is a similar situation in most states. I also believe that the stations are checked at least once a year, unless otherwise requested by the station operator or a consumer.

I know in california the department of weights and measures used to check the pumps regularly. It would be really easy to set the pumps up to short a ounces or so a gallon and not get nailed. They just pump 5 gallons into a can to check it. Over the course of a year that small amount would really add up.
