how critical is this?

i have been having a hard time keep a regular temp in my tank. i would say it fluctuates approx. 3-4 degrees (76-80)is this a big enough margin to start worrying? everything in the tank id doing fine. what do you think?

Depends on what you have in your tank... some things are more sensitive to heat fluctuations than others are.
I assume you've got your heater set at a certain temp? Are you having a hard time keeping the temp up, or does the tank get warmer than the heater is set at? If you're getting that much fluctuation over the course of a day, maybe you would want to consider 2 heaters to distribute the heating load. Just a thought.
With a relatively small tank (33g), I would bet that your problem is a faulty heater, especially if the room temp around the tank stay pretty constant. I trust the tank isn't in front of a window, a/c, or heat vent?

hey wolf,
Yes it does sound the heater is done for. Just a tip, you can run two smaller size heaters in the tank for this very reason. If one fails the other one will back it up....or one in the sump and one in the tank.. Maybe it's a bit of overkill, but having temp fluxuations esp. in a smaller tank is not soo good :)

i appreciate the comments but it is not a bad heater. it is the room my tank is in. the room had no heat except for a portable heater. if the room gets too hot with the portable heater it raises the tank temp and vice versa. i have to keep the temp of the room at a certain temp for the tank temp to be stable. i did go out and buy a new heater figuring it was the problem but it wasn't. i need to keep my room at 66 degrees to keep my tank at a consistant 77 degrees. i never had a problem like this but it is quite annoying.

the extra lighting and pumps are often the contributors to higher temps in sw aquariums, suspended lighting and fans can help soem, but if you are talking about a couple of degress, i would raise the temp to 79 and kep it 79 to 80 all the time, with little or no fluctuation(if your stock will accept ti, you will be fine there)
