How do Anenomes work?

I have several long tentacle anenomes. One I have had for a year and the guy I got it from had sold it the first time to a customer who had it for two years before it got to big for his tank...Yesterday, when I woke up it had shrunk. It was still a well defined anenome, but it was a fraction of the size. Today it is back to normal. Why do anenomes "go in" like that?

Not really sure as to why they do it. But I am pretty positive that they all do something like that especially Condi's and Long Tentacled anenomes.

anemones fill up with water and every now and then they deflate to put fresh water in there.

Another reason that they shrink/deflate to to remove waste products.
