I got a zoo frag today with a bunch of hitch hikers on it. How do I do a fresh water dip to remove them? Could the dip hurt the zoos> How long do I dip them? Would I use RODI water for it?

buffered Ro water the same temperature as your tank. yes you could hurt the zoas, but your definatly going to hurt any invert hikers on them (wich is the intended effect) it will definatly kill flat worms, dont leave them in the FW for more than 5 minutes, I usualy dont go over 3.

So let them sit in RO water for a couple minutes? Thats it? How badly can the zoos be hurt? It wont kill the whole colony right? I really dont want any hitch hikers that came on this frag.

no its not likley to kill the zoanthids, I havent lost a zoa doing FW dips yet, but it is a possibility. I just didnt want you to think there is absolutly no risk involved. (to cover my backside)
its basicly a worst case scenario.
MAKE SURE YOU BUFFER THE WATER and bring it to the right temperature, thats really important.

Ok thanks a lot for the help Z. Once the fw dip is up just put the frag directly back into saltwater? There are no steps in between? And what kind of dip would you reccomend for future reference? After today I think dipping all corals would be a good idea. I hear Kents Iodine is good.

I dipped them for a little over 2 minutes and a lot of flat worms came off. I put them back in sw and flat worms were still coming off. Is it safe to put in the tank now? can any flat worms survive 2 minutes of fw?

I usually swish the coral around real hard in the FW to knock loose as many as possible at the end of the dip. most likley they all died but keep an eye on them if you see any moving in the next hour or two repeat.
I'm sorry I forgot to mention swishing them to knock of the dead/dying ones. flat worms are nasty polluters when they die. I feel like a fool.

no worries. The frag is still sitting in a container of tank water floating in my tank to keep the temp up (kinda like a temporary HOB fuge). I will check it again in the morning to see if it needs another dip. What do you mean by buffer the water?

I have been doing FW dips but never get the water the same temp as I do it in a bowl. It is warm nowhere near 80 however and I have not lost anything. I dipped a child side basketball colony of fire and ice yesterday and it is all open today. I actually see more open more quickly when I do it with cooler water. I hope my luck continues :)
