Spanko had a video…you just get a pair of scissors..snip, snip and snip, whatever size you want. Then the guy put the pieces in a container with rubble rock and put that in the tank for about a week for it to attach, then he glued (super glue gel) the pieces making sure to only glue the rubble…onto a larger rock or plug. He discarded the stump.
I asked Spanko if I could just trim the leather to the size I wanted, and he said I could and save the trimmed pieces and do what the video instructed.

I have a pair of coral scissors and I literally cut around the edge.... roughly 1/2" - 3/4" in and cut along the edge (all the way around if you want).
Then from there I cut it into 1/2" - 3/4" squares and super glue them onto plugs. Now 3-4 weeks later I they are growing trunks -- fully extended even a few days later but they look like fresh baby toadstools about 1" across and 3" high already.
Taking a scissors to your toadstool doesn't do any harm even though you'll see some coral blood come out during the cut. I add some iodine and trace elements when I frag and haven't lost anything yet. You can really really chop up a toadstool too --- I just shaped mine up in the main tank because the head was so big it kept tipping over on other corals.
