You could try cutting a piece of plastic to put over the overflow like a lid (so that the water can still go through the slits). A friend of mine that works at a boat store sells rust-proof metal screen that you could also use to make a cover which would not restrict water flow. Don't know if it would work, but it might be worth a try, if no one has a better idea.
