How do i mount a 3" radio shack hood fan?

I bought a 3-1/8" 115v fan from radio shack yesterday for my wood hood. The problem is, the the housing on the fan is all one piece. Meaning, the housing will not unscrew apart to fit on both sides of the wood hood. It is also square on the outside on both sides and made of metal. I could grind off the back side of the fan flanges where it could've screwed in from the back side to fit a round hole(front side would still have screw holes). I was going to go ahead and do this, but thought i would get other opinions on the installation and see if anyone else has any experience this RS type of fan in their hood.
thanks,

I mounted my fans on the inside of the canopy with screws. No need to try to make it flush with the wood. If you do decide to do it that way, you may be the first.

I really don't think i have a choice doing it this way. I have a 45g tall(36"long) tank with 34-1/2'pc lights. If i mount them inside they will hit the bulb. I only have about 1" clearence between bulb and inside of hood. Thats why i thought of cutting a 3" circle, grinding off the back flanges and sliding it in from the outside of the hood and mount it flush.
Any other ideas?

Dunno how this would work, but it's an idea. You could use silicone between the fan and the hood, clamp it in place while silicone cures (24 hours). The stuff is strong, and will also dampen vibration from the fan. I'd get some more opinions since I've never tried it. I don't see why it wouldn't work though. HTH
