How do I save the critters when converting to live sand?

We have a UGF and crushed coral that we are going to take out of out 75 gallon tank and replace with live sand. I want to save as many of the critters that are in the crushed coral as possible and transfer them over to the live sand. Any thoughts or ideas as how to do this?
We have all sorts of creatures moving around in there including small star fish (size of a quarter or less) that I want to keep.
Thanks in advance.

I don't know of any way to effectivly sift the critters out..When I did my switch,I put the CC in a 10 gallon tank with tank water. You could do this, and pick the little guys out when they appear...Just put a powerhead in there with the CC to keep it going..My CC is still in the 10,and doing well...It's been about six months..I just can't bring myself to throwing out all that life..It is now a seahorse tank...
