red light, does not project a beam, or near as much heat as a white light, you can get red lenses for some flashlights in sporting good departments, aor radio shack has some for certain lights they sell(or at least used to)
or if all else fails, take a red piece of plastic and tape it over your flashlight lenses
the beam projected by other lights, often spooks the critters you are trying ot spot before you get a chance to actually see them

i just unwisely use a mag light. i caught one of my room mate last week staring into my tank at 2 in the morning with his mag. he was just like "SNAILS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, They are every where!!!!!!!!!!!!" kinda crazy.

hehe, if you want a filter kit, they are real easy to find them for the mag light, i have one myself and have had one for my mini too, theya re relatively inexensive too, a flash light is definitely one way, but the red lense will often produce more sightings ;)

Hey Katara at ahsupply.com they sell power compact lights that are red specifically for this reason. For under $25 you can add a small 13 watter and leave it on all night on your tank. It's like a fishy night light ;)

No one appears to have mentioned that fish can't see light in the red spectrum, that is why they are used. ;)
