I used a large cooler
2 pvc pipes for shelter
heater
penguin powerhead with a sponge on the end
You cant keep the lid even slightly closed becuase it will get really hot so the lid has to stay opened but in case a fish wanted to go sky diving I put a piece of material with holes over the top. (Its the squishy stuff you put in your kitchen cubords. You can buy it in rolls at walmart
) This way the system can breath and fish wont jump. You can also use egg crate

Unless your system is cycled it will go through one. I did not know this and now I am having to change 50% of the water every day. Good news is that its already going down after just a couple days. Just use the water from your tank since its already aged. When I put fresh water in, I use a drip line. 1/2 gallon every 10 minutes or so.

Using a cooler, how in the world do you carefully examine fish for parasites, etc.? This is the main reason for QT. If you get a cheap HOB filter for QT, keep an extra filter pad (no carbon) somewhere in your DT system. When you need the QT, just stick in the filter pad and the QT is cycled. Toss it when done, they're cheap.

hey thanks for everything guys here's what i got so far( i added sand just to make it look better)
I'd take the sand out; it can harbor parasites and left-over meds long after the tank is empty. The fish don't care and you want everything in a QT or HT to be easily cleaned and/or sterilized. Stuff like pieces of PVC for hiding are great additions.
