I am currently using all hang in types of filters I want to go with a W/D unit underneth the tank but I am not sure of what I need. Do I need pumps and how do I hook up a Protein skimmer and a UV steralizer>?

You will need a pump in the WD to return water to your tank. As far as skimmers go, you can get them to go right in the sump of the WD or hang off the back of your tank, or stand next to the WD sump.
