But seriously, what you need in either a Multi-Meter (Which measures volts, amps and ohms) or just a regular voltmeter. Your don’t need an ohms meter, because you don’t want to know the resistance in the tank, or the amps in the tank either. You want to measure stray voltage.
This is how you could do it if you use a MM (Multi-meter), keep in mind that not all multi-meters are the same…
A multi meter will have 2 wires, red and black. First, plug in the black wire into the ground socket on the MM, then plug the red wire into the socket for volts, NOT the one for amps. Next, set the dial on the MM to a low range volts setting like 0-10, or 0-20, depending on your model. Don’t set it to a high setting like 100 or 1000, because at those settings a MM will not pick up a few volts. Next put the probe of the red wire in the tank. READ CAREFULLY
, here comes the dangerous part!!! If and only if you have a properly grounded outlet, place the probe of the black wire on the screw holing the face plate of the outlet together. If the outlet is properly grounded, touching anything metal will lead to the ground. If there is no good connection or you have a plastic screw, you can put the black probe into the GROUND (Third) hole in the outlet. DO NOT PUT THE PROBE INTO THE POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE OUTLETS!
If you have set it up and done it right you should be able to read at least a few volts in your tank, like it or not, everyone has them, and if they say they don’t, then either they have grounded their tank, or they are lying!!
