I am 16 years old and know a little about saltwater. Ive heard many ways on how a refigium works. Could anyone tell me how this tank functions. My refigium is abouy 30 gallons 5 feet long and 8 or 10 inches high. It is hooked up to a 275 gallon tank.

refugium is a place for plants/algae to grow with a light hanging over it, sump is a place where all your filtration is kept with no light. just to clarify which do you have?

As rad stated the refugium is a place to grow macroalgae (plants) that help export or remove nitrate from the water. It is also a place to 'grow' natural foods, like pods, for you DT tank inhabitants. Some people have refugium as one section of their 'sump'. Others have a separate refugium that either hangs in or on their DT, or drains into a separate sump.
The sump allows for an increase in your total water volume (solution to pollution is dilution) and a place to put your heater, protein skimmer, media holders (like charcoal) so that you don't clutter up the DT>
Sounds like you have both.

consider that material stolen.

al is right, the only things I will add is in addition to the sump being a: "place to put your heater, protein skimmer, media holders (like charcoal)" it usually has three different types of filtration; chemical, mechanical and biological. chemical being carbon which should be changed monthly, mechanical being filter pads that should also be changed on the monthly and biological being either bio balls (surface area for bacteria to cultivate) or live rock rubble. all those components will aid in the filtration of your water. the refugium is also an important part mostly because of the natural food breeding ground it creates IMO. fish/corals really benefit from a refugium.

Thanks for the info

Rad & Al said it all.
None of my friends are into the hobby.
When I have visitors they love marveling at the tank, and of course they want an explanation of everything. Trying not to take all night long telling them things they are not going to understand (not saying you don't understand it). I tell them my wet/dry is a boilogical filtration system, the 100lbs of $5lb live rock is full of good bacteria, organisms, & neccessary for aquascaping & coral placement(they never understand paying $5lb for a rock), I compare my fuge to like bays, marshes, & wetalnds feeding into the ocean, all the powerheads simulate the ocean current, and the protein skimmer is just like when waves crash on the sand leaving foam & dark skim on the sand.
All we are doing is trying to copy what mother nature does for our oceans.
This may be very elementary, but that is the way I see it.

Sounds good to me

^nice, more material to steal. I really like the marsh part. never thought of it that way.
