Seems like a good start. Have you decided what kind of tank ie.. reef, agressive, fish only, fish only with live rock? What kind of lighting you need depends on what kind of tank inhabitants. If it will be reef, you need to add protien skimmer. What about trace minerals? Plan to add some? What kind of subtrate, CC or LS? you said some live rock, how much? Do you need a heater or chiller where you live? I live in Calif. and I don't need a chiller (hubby keeps the house temp at 75 degrees) but I do use a heater.
I would love to have a 75 gal some day. Right now, I don't have the space so I have 3 smaller ones. 25gal empty (temporarily) 32gal reef, 40gal agressive.

I forgot to mention skimmer, I will probably get one of them. I'm thinking on having 20/30 pounds live rock with base sand and seed with some live sand. I plan on having a fish only tank but hope to have lighting to support some "easy" "low light" corals and my live rock. This is going to be where I work. I made a deal with my boss - I am selling a bunch of stuff we have in our store that hasn't sold and been sitting around a few years and the money I get from that I get to buy my tank etc. I'm thinking I'll end up with about 500 bucks. I know that is not a huge amount to do this project with but I think with some good shopping around I can pull it off.

That is so great. I bet you are excited. I love shopping for fish/supplies. You can search the classifieds section on this board, they usually have pretty good deals. Have a lot of fun.

youll deifnatley need a sump, and a skimmer is an absolute must in all tanks. cant really think of anything esle youll want. oh you might want to get some liquid chemicals and stuff to help corals and lr grow good. bo

Tell me more about sumps.. I have heard of them but I don't have any of them on my tank now.. I use coravite and test/add calcium on my tank at home now.

Hey Denise, sounds like you have a cool project ahead of you. I'm just using a 20 gal (30" long) tank for the sump on my 90. Go to the all-glass web site (if you need the URL email me), click on products, aquariums, then twinflow. They have an explanation of how the overflow works and even an animated demonstration. Basically the overflow has two holes drilled in the bottom of the tank, one for a drain and the other for the return. Water drains down to the sump through one hole and then is returned through the other hole by a pump. Having a sump allows you to use a wet/dry filter if you want but also you can hide unsightly hardware like heaters and protein skimmers in the sump and out of sight. Also you can do water changes and top offs in the sump with out disturbing your critters. If you haven't already bought a tank I would get one like the twinflow which is already pre-drilled, it costs a little more but is well worth it. Have fun!!!
