I am setting up a 55g plexi reef tank and I will be using a 400watt metal hallide lamp. How high from the tank should I have the lamp set up? Cooked fish aren't fun to look at.

Some say right over the water (piece of glass or plexi between it and water) others say up some. I'd give it a few inches since it is a powerful light.

ranger is right, We have ours 10 in from glass tops on bowfront , the glass got real hot till I installed the two radio shack fans in the top. also you want something between the light and the water , we also have the 400 watt 12000k its awsume, if one drop of water hits that bulb it will explode , when its hot, also dont touch the bulb with your hands use a rag, this way you wont get any oil on it...my 2 cts

follow reefs and fixits advice..... about 12 in. up and be sure to have some type of glass cover on the tank.....
